Aly and Andrea. Andrea and Aly. Say it how you like… we’re used to it. That’s what happens when you’re an identical twin. People tend to have an expectation that we look alike, sound alike, think alike, do alike, and talk alike. They expect that we are THE SAME. But really… we’re identical twins with a totally unique perspective.
While we absolutely love being twins, and we’ve taken advantage of the “perks” of our twinship, we also have spent a significant amount of time learning how to stand out as individuals. When we were young, friends would call and ask to speak to “Aly or Andrea.” Seriously. Pick one, people.
The questions they ask have been, are, and will always be the same… not necessarily in this order, but still stupidly predictable are:
“Are y’all twins?” (Yes, we’re from Texas, so they do say “Y’alll!)
“Do you have any brothers or sisters? (Yes, four brothers) Are THEY twins?”
“Did you play tricks on people? Trick your teachers, your husbands?”
“Wouldn’t it be cool if one of you was born at 11:59 and one of you was born on the…. (Wait for it)… next day?” [rolling our eyes, genius]
“And then wouldn’t that be cool if that happened on New Year’s Eve! Then you would be born in (again, four eyes rolling at you)…different years!”
And for the grand finale,
“Do you feel each others pain?”
The only pain we really feel is the predictability in the aforementioned and abbreviated list. It’s like that in the business world as well. At first glance, everyone in a given industry might look “the same.” They sell the same widgets or make the same promises, and we all run the same race.
But if you look a bit closer, there’s a reason we see millions of marketing dollars spent every year just trying to stand out. To be noticed. To be affirmed. The truth is, none of us are really the same, even if we appear to be at first glance. We all have Rock Star qualities that make us who we are and shape how we change the world.
Remember that industry experts know that it might be cute to look alike, but the way to be a Rock Star woman in business is to assimilate enough to be accepted, but differentiate enough to get what you want: a transparent, authentic, and personal connection to your target market. Even with the same DNA, identical twins have totally unique fingerprints. Show them your fingerprint. Its all about allowing VIP access for your customers to get to know you. To really, really know you so they can really, really like you. For most, its branding. For you, its Rock Star Branding.
Tell us your story and tell us what YOU are doing to stand out in the business world where everyone looks alike. We just may become your biggest fans- two for one, even!
