There’s a one-act play out there that should be mandatory in all marital counseling, pre-marital counseling, and dare we say Sales Training. “Defending the Caveman” takes a hilarious peek at the fundamental differences between men and women, and how, going back to the days of cavemen, the same truths were born. We’ve seen it a few times (our last was with @raymondmcanally as Caveman) and its just as funny -and just as true- each time. For example, Caveman truth: Men take pride in being the “hunters” while women take pride in being “the gatherers.” This got us thinking. We, as women, are GREAT not just at gathering shoes and purses at Nordstom’s half yearly sale, but we are really great at gathering information, which is code word for listening, paying attention, empathizing and planning how to help…. all at the same time. Makes for a great entrepreneur, dontcha’ think!
Lets face it. Doing business, and certainly succeeding in business, as a woman is often a very different experience than as a man. Dare we say its all about perception? Dare we say the woman who worked her way to the CEO position did so through tireless hours of learning, perseverance, and straight up ass-busting (not ass-kissing)? She did not sleep her way there, or bat her eyelashes to get there. Her confidence is not arrogance or snobbiness, her work ethic is not child-neglect, her perseverance is not stubbornness, and her smile is not fake. She is the master of organizing and time management, and the genius of relationship building. She can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. She is the Waooh-man. And no doubt, She is a Rock Star.
So we asked a few successful women we know one question:
” Of all your “rock star” qualities, which is the one quality that best serves you in building your World Tour of Success as a woman?”
Here’s what a few of the very cool ladies said…
“My passion for compassion for others… Compassion for others always comes first in my heart, and through that service to others, my business is served.”

“My customers would tell you, that caring for each customer and each of their projects personally, day and night to ensure the complete success of each project as if they are the only one that is important, is what separates me from “the Guys”. They know that when they entrust me with their important promotional products projects, that it will be completed to their satisfaction, no matter how much “caring” it takes.”

“It was Albert Einstein who said “The only real valuable thing is intuition.” While some may argue with Einstein, I would say it is the quality of a good intuition that has served me well through the years. Since success is a journey and not a destination, I know I still have much to learn to continue to be successful. But this I do know- that as I long as I listen to when my intuition urges me to go this way or that, do so.”

“I believe the thing that helps me be successful is giving unconditionally. That only came with time and observation. For me, I receive true personal pleasure from giving, so that “good” feeling is a personal success. That action then naturally causes a chain reaction within your spheres of influence and it always comes back graciously. You must trust, believe and give without expectation.”

“I think the most important “ROCKSTAR” quality I have learned to grow throughout my career has been “take the emotion out of it”. As a women I think we often tend to lead with emotion rather then rational thoughts sometimes and by doing so can create more problems or put off addressing problems that need to be taken care off immediately. I often say to myself “take the emotion out of it” before addressing an issue or responding to an issue and I think it makes me a stronger employee & person.”

“I never consider myself as a “business woman”. I happen to be a woman who owns and runs a business. I think when you label yourself, it’s asking for trouble, and it assumes you see yourself differently than men who own a business. I operate a fierce, competitive business, and the fact that I happen to be a female is a PLUS!!”

“I have always been told that I’m a great listener as well as a very curious person. It took me years to understand that these seemingly unimportant and insignificant qualities are truly a remarkable gifts and that I can use them to my advantage in my business. It is very natural for me to ask questions of other people and get beyond the surface level talk. What I uncover are compelling needs and issues that people are struggling with. This curiosity, coupled with my ability to really hear people, has led me to build a network of remarkable people across the country.”

“Women have a strong connection to their inner guidance, or intuition. While listening to the intuition is key, the real rock star quality comes in having the courage to actually take the action. Courage is a powerful emotion that when acted on not only moves us forward, it also provides the space for the next step to be revealed. And then the process starts all over again. Listening to my inner guidance, having faith/being courageous, taking the action, moving forward (achieving success), space is opened for what’s next….”

“The most important attribute that I carry with me everywhere I go in my handbag of life is a positive attitude. Every moment is perfect (even though it may not seem that way at the time) and if you really believe that you will begin to realize that everything happens in its own ideal time. That’s not to say that you don’t have to do the work, you do! You have to set goals and aspire to achieve great things but if you do and match that with a positive attitude you will see abundance and opportunity in everything that stands before you. You choose every day how you want to see the world, your life and the opportunities and challenges that lie before you. Just like a moth to a flame people are naturally drawn to those who exude confidence and happiness. Just try it and watch what it does for you and your business!”

“As a woman business owner, I am a rock star at tapping into my feminine strength and energy to attract business opportunities.
Instead of telling people why they should work with me, I look for ways to SHOW them why – by showcasing my expertise, submitting my work for awards, maintaining an impeccable personal brand and by exploring new technology and sharing the results I am creating.
I have found that when clients pursue me, they are more willing to commit to the continuous effort marketing requires, which allows me to deliver better results.”

The truth is, we could have kept going with an endless number of rock star women in business. The caveman would still be right and you likely would have heard much of the same: “listening,” “passion,” “relationships,” “positive attitude,” “intuition,” and by all means, “hard work.” Ladies, for all you juggle, all you do, all you “gather,” and all the lives you impact…. we thank you. Keep rockin’ those world tours. And just when you think there are too many obstacles, just remember, you have more fans than you know.

Aly and Andrea, this is a fantastic insight into “how to be successful” (male or female) and actually a really good example of why working for a female boss can be very refreshing!
Thanks for article. Everytime like to read you.
Thanks

Thank you, Steve! You bring up a great point… working with, for, or selling to women IS very different than with men (in general). Focus on the relationships (but still stay professional- no line crossing allowed) and you are always safe. Thank you for your comment and support.
Hello Aly and Andrea,
Thanks for this article. I have so much enjoyed reading about the other women and having a sense of connection with each of them through their self “RockStar” acknowledgment.
You two; Aly and Andrea are making Sound Waives! RockOn RockStar Leaders!
Thank you, Belanie! Isn’t it wonderful watching women everywhere rock their own World Tours of Success? You included!
I love Barbara Wayman’s quote! She is most definitely a rock star. So inspiring to me!
Truly inspiring! Thanks for sharing these insights, they remind me how important it is for women to be true to ourselves and who we are, and that success will surely follow…
